FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HOUSE DEMOCRATS VOTE TO CONTINUE FINANCIAL DEALINGS WITH TERROR STATES DESPITE REPUBLICAN OPPOSITION
During a debate on a bill to divest from Sudan, Republicans offered an amendment to add the other four countries to the list. It was defeated by the Democrat-controlled Legislature in a 122-32 vote. “It just made plain sense to me that the Commonwealth should divest from all countries identified by the United States State Department as state sponsors of terrorism,” Humason said. Republicans made a second attempt to add only Iran to the list, but Democrats used a procedural maneuver to silence further debate on the issue. “The hypocrisy was clear today on the floor as democrat after democrat rose to laud the Sudan divestment bill on the basis of the genocide and horrific things happening in that country yet these same legislators were noticeably silent when it came to including in the bill countries that are know supporters of terrorism against American citizens,” Humason said. “That the Speaker would further stifle debate by minority members of the House was shocking, appalling, and ironic, considering this same censorship exists in the very countries we were discussing.” “I am appalled that those who profess to stand up for human rights and condemn acts of hatred and terror made a choice to stop investing in one country that violates those principles and not all of them,” said House Minority Leader Brad Jones, R-North Reading. “A sponsor of terrorism is a sponsor of terrorism. I am disgusted and extremely disappointed.” * * * Representative Don Humason and his new aide Sarah Latour may be reached at their Westfield District office, 64 Noble Street, Westfield, MA 01085, 568-1366.
