TRIVIA ANSWERS

By Representative Don Humason, Jr.

August 25, 2007

A few weeks ago, I wrote in my column 10 trivia questions pertaining to Massachusetts government and history.  This week I will give the answers to those questions.

First, my thanks to all of you who wrote me with your answers.  The questions must have been easier than I thought because most of you only missed one or two of them.

Three people replied who had all the questions and the bonus question answered correctly: Jason Pereira, Christopher White, and Julieanne Gamache, all of Westfield.  Honorable mention goes to Representative Jeffrey Perry from Sandwich, Massachusetts.  He didn’t get very many answers right, but he gave it his best shot.

I picked randomly from the 3 correct respondents and the winner of the Massachusetts State Flag is Julieanne Gamache.  Congratulations Julieanne!  Thank you for playing.

Now, here are the correct answers:

2) Name 2 Massachusetts Governors who share Representative Don Humason’s birth date of July 31.  GOVERNOR DEVAL PATRICK and FORMER GOVERNOR WILLIAM WELD.

3) When Senate President Bob Travaglini resigned as the presiding officer of the state Senate, the Senate elected the first woman in Bay State history to lead that branch.
Who is the new Senate President?  SENATOR THERESE MURRAY OF PLYMOUTH.

4) The largest public works project in the history of Western Massachusetts began a few weeks ago here in Westfield.  What is that project? THE GREAT RIVER BRIDGE PROJECT.

5) Name the individual that Governor Deval Patrick tapped to be his Commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Recreation.  FORMER WESTFIELD MAYOR RICHARD SULIVAN, JR.

6) Two architects, both with the first name of Charles, are responsible for designing and building a bulk of the Massachusetts State House and State House Extension.  The first Charles in 1795, the second Charles nearly a century later.  Name one, or both, of the architects.   CHARLES BULFINCH and CHARLES BRIGHAM.

7) List 5 people who have held the job as Westfield’s State Representative over the years.

8) When Representative Humason first began working at the State House as a Legislative Aide in 1991, the annual state budget was less than $10 billion.  What is the Fiscal Year 2008 state budget recently passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor in July?  Feel free to round it off.  $26.8 BILLION.

9)  Which came first, the United States Constitution or the Massachusetts Constitution?  THE MASSACHUSETTS CONSTITUTION, ADOPTED IN 1780.
