LOTS TO DO By Representative Don Humason, Jr.
I’ll give the answers to the Massachusetts government trivia questions I asked in last week’s column in a week or so, as well as announce the winner of the prize of the state flag. I’ve had several respondents thus far who have answered every question correctly. I’ll draw from all the correct entries to pick the flag winner. I have several notes of congratulations this week. The first is to Father Dan and the parishioners of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church. Last Sunday, after a beautiful outdoor morning mass, they ceremonially broke ground for the building of their new church on Holyoke Road. I was honored to be in attendance and wish them every success as they undertake this challenge. Their old church was taken down a few weeks ago to make way for the new Great River Bridge project. All that remains on the site are memories. I was thinking of all the weddings, christenings, and funerals I had attended at the old Blessed Sacrament Church over the years. It will be nice to go to these same events in the new building. Two Westfield companies celebrated milestones this week: Pioneer Valley Railroad, a division of Pinsley Railroad, observed their 25th anniversary in business serving the industries and businesses of Westfield and Holyoke. On Tuesday night, company officials, employees, and guests took a nice train ride from the yard on North Elm Street over to Heritage State Park in Holyoke. The company has grown and prospered over the past quarter century. They said it was a combination of working collaboratively with the cities and with the new businesses that has made them so successful. For every train car of material, four tractor trailer trucks are taken off our streets and highways, cutting down on the pollution and congestion the trucks cause. Another business, Jen-Coat, Inc., celebrated their 35th anniversary of doing business in Westfield. They provide quality and service to their customers, and good jobs to a lot of local folks. I had the chance to tour the company last year and was very impressed with what they can do. Congratulations Jen-Coat and Pioneer Valley Railroad! I have the pleasure of appearing as the guest this week on the “State We’re In” program on PBS. Westfield’s own Jim Madigan is the moderator. The half hour show covers many state and local issues. I think this is my first time being a solo guest. You can catch the show on Sunday morning at 10:30 AM, if you’re interested. My wife Janice’s family is coming to town this weekend to visit. They live out in the Boston area. Luckily, there’s a lot going on in Westfield for us to do with them. This weekend is the Vintage Baseball World Series at Billy Bullens field. It’s a great honor for the Whip City to host this event. Janice has some young nieces so we’re also going to take them to play in the new Spray Park at Municipal Field. This weekend is also the Westfield Fair. Now, I’ve probably gone to this fair every year of my life since I was a little kid. The Westfield Fair kicks off the fair season. Next is the Blandford Fair. Then comes the Eastern States Exposition, the Big E. And there are other fairs in the area too. It’s going to be a great weekend! Westfield State College will be back in session soon. The college kids will be returning over Labor Day weekend. If you know a college student who would like to earn extra credit or gain some experience, I am seeking interns for my Westfield District office and my State House office. Have them give me a call if they would like more information. My number is 568-1366. Have a nice week. * * * Representative Don Humason and his new aide Sarah Latour may be reached at their Westfield District office, 64 Noble Street, Westfield, MA 01085, 568-1366.
