MORE TRIVIA

By Representative Don Humason, Jr.

August 11, 2007

A reminder: this weekend, Saturday, August 11 and Sunday, August 12, is a sales tax free shopping weekend in Massachusetts.  The House and Senate passed, and the Governor signed, the legislation creating the law.  So, get out to the shops and stores.  You won’t pay the 5% sales tax on most items costing up to $2500.

I didn’t go to the State House at all this week.  As I reported in my last column, this week is the National Conference of State Legislatures annual meeting and convention in Boston.  The House and Senate are on August summer recess.  And to top it all off, I had some surgery Monday at Noble Hospital to repair an umbilical hernia.

I’ve never gone for a procedure at the outpatient surgical center at Noble.  They did a great job.  Everyone was very kind and helpful.  My surgeon, Dr. Willis Roberts, did a terrific job, as did the nurses and the anesthesiologist.  It’s taken awhile to get back on my feet, but my recovery is coming along fine.  Thanks again to Noble Hospital.

OK, so summer is here and I don’t have as much to write about (let me be honest!).
So, I’m going to ask 10 trivia questions about Massachusetts or state government.  Some are easy, some are more difficult.  If you are a regular reader of my weekly column you will probably know the answers.

Please email at Rep.DonaldHumason@hou.state.ma.us or snail mail me your answers to my Westfield District office, 64 Noble Street, Westfield, MA 01085.  I’ll pick at random from all the correct entries and the winner will receive a Massachusetts state flag flown over the State House.

1) True or False.  A Constitutional Convention is a joint meeting of the House of Representatives and the Senate to debate or vote on amendments to the Massachusetts Constitution.

2) Name 2 Massachusetts Governors who share Representative Don Humason’s birth date of July 31.

3) When Senate President Bob Travaglini resigned as the presiding officer of the state Senate, the Senate elected the first woman in Bay State history to lead that branch.
Who is the new Senate President?

4) The largest public works project in the history of Western Massachusetts began a few weeks ago here in Westfield.  What is that project?

5) Name the individual that Governor Deval Patrick tapped to be his Commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

6) Two architects, both with the first name of Charles, are responsible for designing and building a bulk of the Massachusetts State House and State House Extension.  The first Charles in 1795, the second Charles nearly a century later.  Name one, or both, of the architects.

7) List 5 people who have held the job as Westfield’s State Representative over the years.

8) When Representative Humason first began working at the State House as a Legislative Aide in 1991, the annual state budget was less than $10 billion.  What is the Fiscal Year 2008 state budget recently passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor in July?  Feel free to round it off.

9)  Which came first, the United States Constitution or the Massachusetts Constitution?

10) The Legislature voted early this year to designate an official state reptile.  Name it.

Bonus Question) Who is Representative Humason’s Legislative Aide?
