MY FIRST CONFERENCE By Representative Don Humason, Jr. God was smiling on Westfield Monday when the rain clouds evaporated and the sun shone down on our Memorial Day parade and service afterwards. I don’t remember the crowds along the route being so big. It was a great turnout in support of our veterans. The Senate and House have finished debating their versions of the state budget and now its time to hammer out the differences between the two. The budget amounts to $26.7 billion. A Conference Committee, consisting of three members from each branch, 2 Democrats and 1 Republican from each, has been named by the Senate President and Speaker of the House. These 6 members will be charged with crafting a compromise of the 2 different versions and presenting the finished product to the legislature for their debate and vote. No amendments may be made to the final Conference Committee report; after appropriate debate there is only an up or down vote of the legislators in each branch. Senator Mike Knapik, the ranking Republican on the Senate Ways and Means Committee, will be one of the 6 people working on the final Fiscal Year 2008 budget. Mike and his staff work very hard to make sure the budget is fair and balanced and mindful of all the state’s taxpayers, especially all of us in Western Massachusetts. This week I was named to the Conference Committee dealing with Identity Theft. This is my first time being appointed to a Conference Committee! I have been a member of the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure for several years, as well as the subcommittee on Identity Theft. Identity theft is an area of personal concern as well as a worry about the impact on my constituents. Identity theft can ruin a person’s credit and leave them with hundreds of hours of work trying to clear their good names and reestablish good credit. I am pleased that Republican Leader Brad Jones named me to the committee and look forward to working with the other 5 members as soon as possible. I would like to say hello to the students and chaperones from Abner Gibbs Elementary School who came to Boston Wednesday to walk the Freedom Trail and tour the State House. Senator Knapik and I met up with them on Beacon Hill. They were a great group. Next week, another bunch of Westfield students, this time from Highland Elementary School, will be making the trip to Beantown. It is always terrific to see Westfield people at the State House. Have a great week!
