REPUBLICANS LEAD DEBATE ON ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

Don Humason, Jr., Westfield’s State Representative, and his House Republican colleagues strove to move the state forward on energy and environmental policy today, offering a raft of proposals aimed at increasing the development of renewable energy and the use of alternative fuels in Massachusetts.

During a debate on the state budget, House Republicans offered an amendment requiring 20 percent of all gas and diesel fuel sold in Massachusetts be alternative fuels, such as biodiesel or ethanol, by the year 2020.

They also proposed plans mandating the state buy only alternative fuel vehicles when adding to its fleet and providing grants to help cities and towns purchase alternative fuel vehicles.

On Tuesday, Republicans put forward an amendment allowing all ENERGY STAR products to be sold sales tax-free to promote green and energy efficient appliances.

Although all three proposals were rejected by the Democrat-controlled House, the Republican caucus vowed to continue pushing the issue.

“Our caucus is pushing measures that my constituents are telling me they want.  Things like promoting alternative fuels and energy efficiency in our homes, schools, and state government buildings,” Humason said.

“Conserving energy and protecting the environment are key issues for Republicans in Massachusetts,” said House Minority Leader Brad Jones, R-North Reading. “Our neighboring states are surpassing us in enacting meaningful, forward-thinking environmental policy, and it is crucial for us and for future generations that we catch up as soon as possible. We will do everything possible to keep this conversation going among legislators so that Massachusetts can move forward.”

“Although I no longer serve on the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, I still have an interest in these issues,” Humason said.  “And I am hopeful that the Senate during their budget deliberations in May will be successful in promoting these measures.  At the very least, I’d like to see these bills come out of committee during this session.”
