In Like a Lion By Sarah Latour, Legislative Aide to Representative Don Humason, Jr.
This week, I am trying my hand at writing Representative Don Humason’s weekly column. This is an exciting job for me, and only one of the many different tasks I perform as Don’s Legislative Aide. If there is one thing that I have been taught, working under both Don and Joe Wynn, other than that there is no such thing as a stupid question, it’s that there is never a dull moment in either of our offices. There is always a letter to write, someone to make a call on behalf of, or an event to attend. I think that’s what I like best about this job, the lack of conformity, not having to push papers all day. Speaking of the different tasks I perform, congratulations to the Colleen and her court and to the other award recipients who were honored at the Sons of Erin Irish Night this past Saturday, It was a privilege to be able to award them with letters of recognition, and the corned beef dinner was great too! As much as I enjoy working in our district office on Noble Street in Westfield, I really enjoy being at the State House in Boston. I’m not sure why, I do everything in Boston that I do in Westfield, I think, though, that it’s the history of the place and the hustle and bustle of being in Boston that makes working there such an adventure. On Monday and Tuesday of this past week, I spent my working hours at the State House. When I drove in, I parked at the Riverside T stop in Newton and rode the green line to Park Street, conveniently located at the bottom of Beacon Hill. I haven’t rode a public form of transportation since I lived in Chicago a little over a year ago, but that long 45 minute ride made for a fabulous commute in. While I was at the State House, I attended the 3rd Annual Massachusetts Airport Management Association (MAMA) “Day On the Hill” and an aviation caucus; these events featured discussions on how to promote and support aviation; our very own Barnes Airport was no stranger to this discussion. Representative Humason also received an award for acting as their 2007 Aviation Caucus Co-Chairman. I also attended an event put on by the Massachusetts Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs. This, like the events on aviation, was very pertinent to Westfield and the hundreds of families who use our local Westfield Boys & Girls Club. There were many keynote speakers, including Lieutenant Governor, Tim Murray; House Minority Leader, Representative Brad Jones; and Senate President, Senator Robert Travaglini. These speakers had nothing but good things to share about the kind of effect the Boys & Girls Clubs around Massachusetts have on children and families. I learned a lot from the keynote speakers and hope to bring that knowledge with me, back to Westfield. On Friday, I attended a Library Legislative Breakfast, at the Westfield Athenaeum, Representative Humason is a great supporter of libraries and often talks about the vast knowledge they bring to the people they serve. Soon after, I hosted office hours in the Reed room; it was great to see such a nice turn out! By the way, I was looking through one of our Massachusetts Agriculture calendars; did you know that March is sponsored by the Massachusetts Maple Producers Association? I also found out that Massachusetts maple season usually starts a little before this month; this season only lasts for six weeks, depending on the weather, so…get down to your local maple sugar house for some great, fresh, homemade maple syrup!! Next week, Representative Don Humason will be back writing the column, I hope I did him justice with my first try. Thanks Don!
