COMMITTEES ASSIGNED By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.
It was cold last Saturday for the 3rd annual Penguin Plunge. Really cold! The air was 20 degrees and the water was 33 degrees. But that didn’t deter me and approximately 130 other plungers from jumping through a hole in the ice of the Congamond Pond to raise money for the new Amelia Park Children’s Museum. Hey, it’s for a good cause! It’s been surprisingly busy for me lately. I’ve had to be in Boston far more than I’d expected, especially so early in the year. We’re not even meeting in formal sessions or holding regular committee hearings yet. In January I was in Boston for 14 of the 31 days in the month! The House special committee on Child Abuse and Neglect, of which I am a member, has been holding hearings pertaining to the Department of Social Services and state child welfare in general. Next Tuesday there is going to be a big public hearing which will be open for the public to testify. The House Minority Leader, Brad Jones, this week appointed me to the advisory board for the Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative Fund. The 12-member advisory board will help oversee a fund that gives grants to Massachusetts schools for information technology education. The CITI fund was established by the Legislature in section 31 of chapter 123 of the acts of 2006. Grants from the Commonwealth Information Technology Initiative Fund will be available for teacher development, curriculum enhancement and other initiatives. “Don’s work as a member of the Joint Committee on Higher Education during the past legislative session makes him a good match for the advisory board,” Jones said. “His voice will be a valuable asset to the board.” I thank the Minority Leader for appointing me to the CITI Fund Advisory Board and look forward to serving. I am especially hopeful to be able to represent schools in Westfield and Western Massachusetts and assist them to receive grant funding. The Speaker of the House and the House Minority Leader made their Legislative committee appointments this week. I will serve on 4 committees this session. I am pleased to report that I have been reappointed to the Joint Committees on Higher Education and Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure. I serve as the ranking Republican member on both those committees. I was also appointed to the Joint Committees on Public Health and Transportation. With the Great River Bridge project slated to start soon, I requested the Transportation Committee and was gratified when Representative Jones appointed me. With my previous experience at the state’s Executive Office of Health & Human Services, the Public Health slot is a good fit for me. Unfortunately, with my new responsibilities and assignments, I wasn’t able to keep my position on the Environment, Natural Resources, and Agriculture Committee. I’ll miss that committee, but with Westfield’s farms, the Westfield River, and our open space issues, I intend to stay involved. Congratulations to United Bank on the opening of their new branch office at 168 Southampton Road on the North side of Westfield. And to CVS on their relocation to a new store on Franklin Street. Have a good Super Bowl weekend! Representative Don Humason and his new aide Sarah Latour may be reached at their Westfield District office, 64 Noble Street, Westfield, MA 01085, 568-1366. Their Boston address is State House Room 542, Boston, MA 02133, (617) 722-2803. Email address: Rep.DonaldHumason@Hou.state.ma.us |
