DISTRICT NEWS

By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.

February 10, 2007

I’d like to use my column this week to tell you about some news from around my district, the city of Westfield.

Congratulations to Anne Elizabeth Norton, the 2007 Westfield Colleen.  She and her Court were crowned last Friday at the Sons of Erin Colleen Ball at Chez Josef.  Congratulations also to Jack Quinn, Irish Man of the Year, Mary Pettengill, Irish Woman of the Year, and Joseph Wise, Parade Marshall.

The Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade is Sunday, March 18.  I’m looking forward to that fun-filled day.

Last Saturday, Senator Knapik, Mayor Sullivan, Adjutant General Oliver Mason, and I joined with other public and military officials to welcome back to the United States members of Detachment 1, Company C, 3rd Battalion 126th Army Aviation Regiment.  These soldiers had been in Iraq for a year providing medical evacuation of personnel, supplies, and equipment, performing search and rescue, and air crash support.

When you see the big Blackhawk helicopters flying overhead, think of the good work these men and women did on our behalf overseas.  Welcome home!

The Superintendent of Schools, Tym McDowell, along with Abner Gibbs Principal Maggie Adams and other Abner Gibbs staff were at the State House Monday to receive recognition for being designated a 2007 Compass School by the Massachusetts Department of Education.

They received the award for their significant and continuous improvement in education.  Senator Knapik and I presented them with citations of recognition from the House and Senate.  Congratulations Abner Gibbs!

Ward 4 City Councilwoman Mary O’Connell asked me to mention that the Westfield Boys and Girls Club offers their swimming pool facilities to adults and seniors every morning from 6:30-8:30 AM for a small fee.  If you would like to dive in, call the Club for at 562-2301 for details.

I’d like to say hello to scout Zack Johnson of Boy Scout Troop 821.  Zack came by my office this Wednesday to interview me for a project he’s doing.  His family was with him.  Zack’s grandfather grew up in the house where my District Office is located, 64 Noble Street.

Congratulations to the kids at Southampton Road School.  398 students collected 22,876 Hood milk Red Sox caps.  Because of this feat they were awarded as the top Massachusetts winner in the Hood school fundraising contest.  They’ll receive an ice cream party for the students.  Good work kids!

I was up at the Hampton Ponds last Saturday night for an excellent community roast pork dinner.  The Hampton Ponds Association holds these suppers to raise money for scholarships they award to lucky students every year at their 4th of July parade.  It was a good dinner and nice to see everyone.

Governor Deval Patrick was the keynote speaker at the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce Outlook 2007 luncheon Friday in Agawam.  This event draws over a thousand local business people and community leaders every year.

I’d like to say hello to Julie Copoulos of Westfield.  Julie is volunteering three days a week in my Westfield office.  She is a student at the University of Massachusetts.

If you call the office you’ll either speak with Julie, my aide Sarah Latour, me, or Southwick Tolland Regional High School Student Stephanie Wiater, who is also interning in the office.  It’s a busy place!

My wife and I are attending the St. Mary’s Wine Tasting fundraiser Saturday night at the St. Mary’s High School gym.  Maybe we’ll see you there!

The Westfield Republican City Committee is holding their annual Lincoln’s Day Brunch this Sunday, February 11, from 10 – noon, at East Mountain Country Club.  Tickets are $20 each and include the delicious brunch.  New Republican State Party Chairman Peter Torkildsen is the guest speaker.

Have a great and busy week!
