THANKS JOE AND GOOD LUCK!

By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.

January 20, 2007

If you are like me, you probably spent much of Monday, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, talking about the stunning upset victory of the New England Patriots over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday night.  Or maybe you were caught up in the exploits of CTU agent Jack Bauer on the Fox hit show 24.  Or perhaps you were waiting for the season premier of American Idol.

Even at work in Boston this week, where many of us were spending time reviewing and signing on as co-sponsors to legislation filed by other representatives and senators, conversation around the water cooler tended towards those topics.

Oh, there were other stories too; the downfall of former House Speaker Thomas Finneran, Democrat of Mattapan, who was convicted of Federal obstruction of justice for perjury.  Governor Deval Patrick’s Cabinet appointments.  The swearing in of the remaining Constitutional Officers (Secretary of State, Attorney General, Auditor, Treasurer).

Pop culture and celebrity gossip are as much a guilty pleasure in the halls of the State House as anywhere else.  One legislator even filed a piece of legislation he called the “Britney Spears bill.”  It is aimed at prohibiting the operation of a motor vehicle with a child in your lap, just as Britney Spears was infamously photographed doing last year.  He figured naming the bill after the pop celebrity would help draw attention to his bill.

Speaking of celebrities, our own Joe Wynn, my loyal and hard-working Legislative Aide for more than 4 years, is leaving my office.  This was his last week as my aide and Chief of Staff.  He has accepted a new job.  Although he will no longer be in state service, he will continue in public service.

Joe will now be working as the coordinator of a new assisted-living program with WestMass ElderCare, a private, non-profit human service agency out of Holyoke that provides programs for elderly and disabled people.  And he'll be working for Executive Director Priscilla Chalmers who lives right here in Westfield.

I would like to publicly thank Joe Wynn for his 4 years of service to me and to the people I represent.  Many of you in the 4th Hampden District have contacted my office over the years and spoken with this bright, energetic, caring young man who in many instances worked with me to resolve your cases or find the answers to your questions about the state bureaucracy.

Joe has grown a great deal in the 2 terms he worked by my side.  Where he was once a shy and quiet individual, Joe is now an outgoing and personable man who was inspired to run for elected office and serve the people of Westfield on the City Council.  Of course Joe will also continue in his role as one of Westfield’s 7 At-Large City Councilors.

Joe and I have been friends for many years.  We grew up and attended Central Baptist Church together.  He was a student of mine when I taught Judo and self-defense at the Westfield YMCA.  And he was Legislative Intern in Senator Mike Knapik’s office when I served as the Senator’s Chief of Staff.  Joe was a natural and obvious choice when the time came for me to hire my staff person after I was elected Westfield’s State Representative.

Joe’s quality of character, his drive and work ethic, and his kindness and sense of humor will be missed.  I wish him well with his new position and congratulate him as he begins the next step in his career.  Thanks Joe and Good Luck!

Taking Joe’s place will not be an easy task, but I think I’ve found a person who is up to the challenge.

Many of you already know Sarah Latour from watching my Cable Show or calling my office.  Sarah has interned in my office for over a year while she completed school at Western New England College.  Now Sarah has graduated and will begin the job as my new Legislative Aide on Monday, January 22.

I look forward to working with Sarah and think you will enjoy working with her too.  Welcome Sarah!  Have a great week.  Go Pats!
