CONSTITUENT SURVEY

By Representative Don Humason, Jr.

December 8, 2007

I apologize for not doing a column last week.  I got so busy with the final Dan Kane Singers Christmas Spectacular concert in Springfield that I didn’t have time to write one.

Turns out there wasn’t much happening at the State House the week after Thanksgiving anyway.  By the way, our DKS concert was fantastic.  We sold out the Mass Mutual Center and entertained over 5400 people with terrific Christmas music.  It was great.

I got word this week that the tree lighting ceremony at the State House will be Tuesday, December 11.  The Governor will be back from his trip to China and the Mead family will be invited to come to the State House to witness the lighting of the tree they donated to the people of the Commonwealth.

I got some calls recently from people outraged over news that a legislator from the Boston area had filed a bill making it a crime for parents to spank their children.  These people argued, and I agreed with them, that parents should have the right to raise their children as they see fit and that government should not interfere unless some form of abuse is taking place.

This got me thinking that I should do a survey of my constituents, at least those who read my weekly column in the Westfield Evening News.  Many of my colleagues do these surveys to take the pulse, so to speak, of the people whom they represent.

This will only work if enough people respond to make it a representative sample, so please send me your answers to the following questions.

December 2007 Constituent Survey:

1)      Should state government make it illegal for parents to spank their children or interfere with child rearing in any way?

2)      Do you favor casino gaming (resort-style casinos) in Massachusetts?

3)      Should state government make it illegal for you to play online poker or to gamble online in other ways?

4)      Do you support the state’s 5.3% income tax being eliminated, as a ballot question will seek to do?

5)      Should the Legislature keep its promise from 18 years ago when it raised the state     income tax and roll the income tax back to 5%?

6)      Do you support giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants in Massachusetts?

7)      Do you favor giving illegal immigrants or the children of illegal immigrants tax- payers subsidized in-state tuition rates to public colleges like Westfield State   College or UMass?

8)      Should state government make it illegal for individuals 18 years old and younger to operate All Terrain Vehicles?

9)      Should state government expand the bottle bill to include other beverage    containers such as water bottles?

10)   Do you support changing the law to allow sportsmen and women to hunt on    Sundays?

Mail your answers to me or drop them off at my district office at 64 Noble Street, Westfield.  You may also email me at Rep.DonaldHumason@hou.state.ma.us
