MASSACHUSETTS TRIVIA II

By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.

August 19, 2006

I’d love to tell you about all the things happening at the State House right now but the truth is

it has been pretty slow.  I didn’t go down to my office on Beacon Hill at all this week.

There continues to be a lot happening with the Big Dig and the change in leadership at the Turnpike Authority that will finally give Governor Romney a look into the way the Authority has been managed.

Logan Airport remains a hotbed of activity on the Homeland Security front with recent flights diverted to Logan because of suspicious behavior or activity on board planes.

Politics and political campaigns are heating up across the state.  First and foremost is the race for Governor.  But at my level, State Representative, there are also campaigns going on.  Election Day, November 7, will be here before we know it.

There is a hearing scheduled for next week on the auto insurance rates Bay State drivers pay.  It was announced this week that the auto insurance industry is proposing another cut in their rates for this year.

Obviously, I agree the rates need to go down but I am deeply suspicious of an industry that has charged Massachusetts drivers some of the highest insurance rates in the country for many years.  Call me cynical, but it seems like curious timing that with auto insurance reform legislation filed in Boston the industry is again proposing to lower their rates.

There is some debate in the Legislature right now about bringing the House and Senate back into a full formal session this fall to take up a bonding bill the Leadership failed to act on before the clock ran out on July 31.  This would violate our established rules, but I might support it if the session’s scope was limited to a specific date, time, and subject.

If you’ve followed my column you will remember that I ran a column awhile ago with trivia questions about Massachusetts and asked readers to write or email me with their answers.  I then selected from all of the correct submissions a winner who received a gift certificate to Leo’s Gallery Deli in downtown Westfield.  This week we’re going to do it again.

Below are 10 questions and a bonus question.  If you think you know the answers, email them to me at Rep.DonaldHumason@hou.state.ma.us or mail your answers to me at my district office at 64 Noble Street, Westfield.  I’ll run the answers in a future column.

Now, to the Massachusetts Trivia questions:

1)      How many counties are there in Massachusetts?

2)      What is the official state marine mammal of the Commonwealth?

3)      Who is the official state heroine?

4)      What is the official state polka song?

5)      Who designed the current Massachusetts State House?

6)      How many Republican State Representatives and State Senators are there in the Massachusetts Legislature?

7)      How many Democrat State Representatives and State Senators are there in the Massachusetts Legislature?

8)      Name all the Republican and Democrat candidates for the Governor’s race this fall.

9)      What is the newly-designated official state sport of the Commonwealth?

10)  The House of Representatives has a cod fish for a mascot and it hangs in the House chamber.  We call it The Scared Cod.  The Senate has a cod fish built into a chandelier in their chamber.  What do they call theirs (with tongue-in-cheek?)

Bonus question) When I read to young children in Westfield’s elementary schools, I sometimes read this famous story which is also the official children’s book of the Commonwealth.

Send or email me your answers and I will randomly select from all the correct entries the winner of a $10 gift certificate to Leo’s Gallery Deli restaurant.  To make this even more fun, I will also randomly select from all the incorrect entries a winner who will receive a $10 gift certificate to Chad’s Good Table restaurant.  Have a great week!
