LOW PLATE LOTTERY

By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.

July 1, 2006

As a State Representative, I am entitled to get a low number license plate with my seat number in the House of Representatives, the state seal, and the word “House” on it.  I’ve been Westfield’s State Representative for three and a half years and still haven’t gotten the plate.  My current license plate is old but still legible.  I’ve had 303IPX since I got my first car in high school.  I know I’ll need to get a new plate one day, but I’d miss the one I have now.

If you would like a low number plate, this could be your lucky year.  The Registry of Motor Vehicles is holding its annual low number license plate lottery.    According to the Mass RMV website, “Massachusetts’ drivers can try their luck at obtaining one of the coveted low number license plates. There are 239 plates available this year. Some of the more desirable plates that are up for grabs are Y7, 8L and 221.

“The popularity of these plates continues to be overwhelming, we received 4,490 applications last year,” said Registrar of Motor Vehicles Anne L. Collins. “If you don’t win the first time, don’t worry, we will again be giving 25 lucky people a second bite at the apple by holding a runner up drawing.”

“Applications are available in RMV branches and online at www.mass.gov/rmv. All entries must be post marked by August 11, 2006. Postcard entries will not be accepted. Winners who do not register their car with their new lottery plate by December 31, 2006 automatically forfeit their plate.

“Boston Herald Columnist and WRKO radio personality Howie Carr will be emceeing the drawing, which will be held in mid-September. Applicants should check the Registry website, www.mass.gov/rmv later this summer for details on the official drawing date.”

It was one of those unusual weeks in the House where we were actually in session three days in a row.  If fact, we were in Boston for a rare Friday session.  It wasn’t as busy as you might expect though, considering the start of the new fiscal year is Saturday, July 1, and the end of the current formal session is approaching on July 31.  In fact, there was a lot of down time as override votes get processed and bills move back and forth from committee.

Besides waiting to vote on the Conference Committee report of the state budget, the House took up several overrides of Governor Romney’s vetoes of sections of the supplemental and economic stimulus bills previously passed by the Legislature.  We also passed a bill licensing the profession of massage therapy and increased the state’s minimum wage gradually over the next three years.

It should be no secret to my constituents that I love my job. One of the main reasons is that I get to do a bunch of fun and interesting things.  Monday I worked at Cold Stone Creamery at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield scooping ice cream as part of a charitable event to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.  Tuesday I went to the new Starbucks in Westfield for their Summer Festival and got to sample some great drinks.

My cable show, "From the State House to your House," aired on Comcast Channel 15 Wednesday night at 8:30 PM.  My guests were Bob Brown and Chris Lindquist from the Westfield Athenaeum.  The show repeats each week at the same time so look for it again next Wednesday.

It’s been 230 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the start of the great American way of life.

Come celebrate that freedom and independence at the Westfield fireworks at Stanley Park on Monday July 3.  Come watch the parades on Tuesday July 4 at Hampton Ponds at 10 AM or later in Wyben at 6:30 PM.  Happy Birthday America!
