DAY BY DAY

By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.

March 11, 2006

Congratulations to the Westfield Kiwanis Club on a fun and successful auction last Sunday.  I sponsored one of the blocks of items and had the privilege of going "on air" with Don Blair and Gary Lynch to help with the bidding.  I even bid on a couple of things myself and came away a winner.  It's a tradition that's been going on for 36 years, and to me the Kiwanis TV/Radio Auction is a great bit of unique Westfield Americana.

The House did not meet in a formal session this week, but I still went to Boston.
On Monday the Governor and his Secretary of Health & Human Services, Tim Murphy, briefed members of the Republican caucus on the latest concerning the pending health care access bill.

On Tuesday, I met with Chairman Vinny Pedone of the Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure, concerning an Identity Theft bill our committee will soon be releasing for debate.  As I've written previously, I am a member of this committee as well as an appointee to the special subcommittee on Identity Theft.  Millions of Americans are potential victims of credit card and identity theft and we want to pass a law in Massachusetts to protect consumers and victims alike.

On Wednesday, Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey selected a Western Mass man to be her running mate.  Reed Hillman, former Sturbridge State Representative and Superintendent of the Mass State Police, is a good choice for Lieutenant Governor.  He's honest, capable, liked by people on both sides of the political aisle, and a no nonsense guy.  I know him well and am eager to support him and Kerry as they introduce themselves to the voters of the Commonwealth over the next 8 months.

Attention college students and parents of college kids:  I have applications for summer jobs with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation available in my office.  You need to be 18 years old.  Positions include lifeguards, clerks, summer workers, and laborers at the state's pools, campgrounds, and recreational areas.

The Governor's office does the hiring but I will be happy to offer my personal recommendation for each Westfield candidate who applies through my office.  Call me at 568-1366 to get an application.

The Westfield Theatre Group, a department of the Westfield Woman's Club, is in rehearsals right now preparing for an excellent swashbuckling musical adventure, "The Scarlet Pimpernel."  The show opens on Friday, March 24, and runs every weekend through April 8.  Tickets may be obtained by calling the box office at 572-6838 or by going to www.westfieldtheatregroup.com.

The Saturday, March 25 performance of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" is a benefit fundraiser for the Carson Center for Human Services.  There is a reception at the Women's Club before the curtain goes up at 8 PM with wine, food, and silent auction items.  Reservations for this special performance can be made by calling 572-4132.

March 25 also happens to be the 25th anniversary celebration for the Westfield Evangelical Free Church on Southwick Road.  I have enjoyed attending services at EFree with my family for the past year and am looking forward to celebrating with Pastor David Young and the congregation.  I have even requested a citation from the Legislature and the Governor to commemorate the event.

March is a festive month for those of Irish heritage.  Saint Patrick's Day is fast approaching and also the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade.  Later this year Janice and I are going on our honeymoon in Ireland.  We've both been over to the old country before and we're looking forward eagerly to our wedding and the trip back to the Emerald Isle.
