HAPPY THANKSGIVING By Joe Wynn, Aide to Don Humason, Westfield's State Representative
Happy Thanksgiving week to you! It's one of my favorite holidays... the family, the fall season, and of course, the food! Sometimes the hardest thing for me to do is slow down, relax, and really enjoy it. Don and I wish the very best to you and your family this Thanksgiving. Something new to be thankful for came up this week. How about a new bridge on Elm Street? Senator Knapik, the Mayor, and the many others who have worked so hard and long on seeing it through must have been thrilled like Don to get word this week. Of course, we'll all believe it when we see it - actual shovels in the ground that is - but it may even start this year. My grandfather always says, "Nah, they've talked about building those bridges since we moved here." That was back in the 60's when he was relocated to Westover by the Air Force, built a home on the north end, and moved my mother's family up here from Louisiana. I remember telling him a few summers back, "I think they were talking about building them even before that, Grandpa." Grandpa has been in the Holyoke Soldiers' Home now for a few years. He still won't believe me when I tell him the new Route 20 bridge has actually been built, never mind talking about the north end bridge. *** After the holiday, we hope to see you at Don's annual free ice-skating event. It's next Saturday, November 25, from 5 to 6 PM at Amelia Park. Every year he invites the children of Westfield and their families to join him for free ice-skating... Don's treat! There will be cookies and hot chocolate from Adrienne's Cafe too. Hope you can make it. *** In next weeks column, we'll have some information Don would like to share with you on the new statewide health insurance plan due to take effect next year. The legislature's Joint Committee on Healthcare Financing provided our office with a Constituent's Aid to the new Healthcare Reform Law. Its a basic summary to help individuals better understand the plan. The whole thing is still a work in progress, but hopefully it will achieve its goal of getting everyone in the Commonwealth insured and be something we can all be thankful for this time next year. So, more on that next week. Until then... Please enjoy a Happy Thanksgiving. |
