COUNTDOWN
A week from today I am going to be married. I can't believe how quickly the engagement has flown by. I asked Janice to marry me on Christmas Day last year. Now I can't believe how busy things have gotten as we approach our wedding day. Needless to say next week is going to be a tad hectic! We're counting down the days. I just found out that I have to go to Boston next Wednesday for a caucus with President Bush's former Chief of Staff, Andy Card. Andy is a former Massachusetts Republican State Representative. He's held a number of important positions in state and federal government. He's a very impressive man, a real inspiration to a rank and file legislator like me. I guess I can make time to meet with him. Janice wouldn't mind! Speaking of countdowns, there are only 4 weeks to the state's General Election on November 7. Candidates across the Bay State are scrambling to get themselves out there in front of the voting public. Most of the attention has been focused on the Governor's race, but there are also races for United States Senator and Congressman, Massachusetts State Senators and Representatives, Clerk of Courts, Governor's Council, and more. There are also 3 ballot questions this year that haven't really gotten much publicity. Question 1 is about the Sale of Wine by Food Stores. Question 2 is about the Nomination of Candidates for Public Office. Question 3 is about Family Child Care Providers. For more information about these questions, call the Secretary of State's office at 1-800-462-VOTE. If you are already a registered voter give yourself a pat on the back and be sure to turn out on Election Day. If you aren't registered to vote yet there's still time. But you only have until October 18, next Wednesday. Stop into City Hall and register in the City Clerk's office on the 2nd floor. It's free and quick. Who may register to vote? According to the Massachusetts Secretary of State's office, only a person who is a U.S. resident, and a resident of Massachusetts, and 18 years of age on or before Election Day, and not currently incarcerated for a felony conviction. I have a friend who is fond of saying, "If you don't vote then you have no right to complain!" State Treasurer Timothy Cahill announced this week that the Massachusetts Lottery had a record-setting year with the highest level of sales in the history of the Lottery. They took in $4.5 billion and returned $951 million to cities and towns across the Commonwealth in local aid. The Governor proposed, and the Legislature voted, to uncap the Lottery and return even more money to communities like Westfield. Senator Mike Knapik and I were pleased to support that effort. I'd like to say hi to all the Westfield folks I saw last weekend up at the annual Granville Harvest Festival. I was impressed by how many residents of the Whip City were up there in Granville. Many of them stopped me to say hello and mentioned that they read my column each week in the Westfield Evening News. I want to offer my congratulations and those of the entire Massachusetts House to Westfield resident Jeffrey Scarfo who received an award this Thursday from the Western Region Citizen Advisory Board of the Department of Mental Retardation for his outstanding success in transitioning from school to adult life. Others received honorable mention, including Luis Torres-Otero, Annie Schlichtig, Jessica Westcott, and Anne Wilson. Finally, I'd like to say goodbye to Westfield's own Granny Annie. Annie Wilmot is leaving Hampton Ponds to head west and will live with her son in California. We will all miss her smiling face and can-do attitude. Goodbye Annie! Representative Don Humason and his aide Joe Wynn may be reached at their Westfield District office, 64 Noble Street, Westfield, MA 01085, 568-1366. |
