STATE SENATOR DON HUMASON
After winning a special election, Donald F. Humason, Jr. was sworn into office on November 20th. The Senator is serving as the Senate Minority Whip in his first term in the State Senate. He has been selected to serve on several key legislative committees such as; Veterans and Federal Affairs, Public Health, Revenue, Children, Family and Persons with Disabilities, and the budget writing Senate Ways and Means.
Don is also the Chair of the Legislature’s Aviation Caucus, and a member of several other caucuses including the Library Caucus, Parks Caucus, Public Higher Education Caucus, Small Business Caucus, Gateway Cities Caucus, Sportsmans Caucus, Regional Transit Authority Caucus, and Boating Caucus.
Prior to serving in the Senate, Don was a member of the House of Representatives since 2002, representing his hometown of Westfield,.
As the Director of Legislative Affairs of the state’s Executive Office of Health & Human Services in Boston from 1999 to 2002 Don played a central role in shaping policy in vital areas. His legislative career began in 1991 as an aide to Representative Mike Knapik. Following Knapik’s 1994 election to the Senate, Don served as his Chief of Staff for the next five years.
Prior to his time at the State House, Don was a Trial Court Security Officer at Westfield District Court and as a Respite Counselor at the Crisis and Transitional Respite of the Westfield Area Mental Health.
Don, a life-time resident of Massachusetts, graduated from Westfield High School and is a 1989 graduate of Westfield State College; he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice, with minors in Spanish and psychology.
Throughout his career, Don has been a strong advocate for meaningful state government reforms that deliver essential services and programs while maintaining high standards of accountability and effectiveness. His respect for the working taxpayers of the state drives his tireless efforts to pass commonsense laws and reduce burdensome tolls, taxes, and fees.
Don is the son of Westfield firefighter Don Humason, Sr. and Highland Elementary School nurse Alberta Humason. Don and his wife Janice Tracey Humason have a son Quinn, who was born in the summer of 2011.
