WEEKLY UPDATE Westfield Evening News column
There’s a feeling of fall in the air tonight. The rain that put a damper on the Westfield Fair and day two of the Air Show at Barnes airport last weekend, as well as the first half of the work week, has gone offshore and the air is dry and cool this night. As I write my column the Patriots are playing against the Rams in the third NFL preseason game. I’ve been talking to friends at Westfield State University and the Westfield Schools and they are getting ready to welcome students back for a new school year next week. Please be extra cautious as you drive to work next week and be on the lookout for school buses and kids going back to the classrooms. Katie Byrne, who has been interning in my State House and district offices, had her last day this week and goes back to school at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I’d like to say thanks to Katie for her stellar service this summer. She has gone above and beyond in her public service and really stepped up to fill the vacancy created when my former Chief of Staff, Sarah Latour, left to take a new job. Thanks to all my terrific interns from this summer: Katie, April, Natasha, Cheryl, Marcus, and Shawn. With their assistance the people of Westfield were very well-served. With my interns having completed their internships and the Legislative Aide position in my office still unfilled I am going to be a bit pressed to keep up with the volume of calls and emails coming into my two offices. Please continue to contact me if I may be of service, but please be patient with me until I can get my staff situation resolved. Thanks! I was in Boston this week. The State House wasn’t completely empty but it was pretty obvious that the Legislature wasn’t in formal session. The hot topics in the halls of the state capitol this week were wind farms and casino gaming. Speaker DeLeo recently stated in an interview that he didn’t foresee the Legislature reconvening to vote on the Governor’s amendment to the House-Senate Conference Committee version of the expanded gaming bill passed in the moments before the clock ran out on the 2009-2010 Legislative session July 31st. And there’s a lot of talk on the Cape Wind project proposed for Nantucket Sound and other, smaller wind farm projects around the state. The controversy centers on whether these green renewable energy projects might be too costly for the amount of energy generated and have too much of an adverse impact on the environment due to their siting requirements. The state primary election day, Tuesday, September 14, is rapidly approaching. It’s safe to say we will all begin being deluged with political ads on the television and radio from Labor Day through the November 2 general election. I will be taping a new episode of my cable show, “From the State House to Your House,” on Monday. My guest is Westfield media celebrity and WGBY public television host Jim Madigan. I’ve scheduled several different public office hours at locations around the city other than my district office at 64 Noble Street. I’ll give you the dates as we get closer but the office hours locations include the Westfield Council on Aging, the Westfield YMCA, Elm Pizza, and the Hampton Ponds Association building. I have a couple ideas for future columns: I haven’t done a state trivia column in awhile. I’ve been doing some research on one of the Governors of the Bay state who was from Westfield. And I’m going to give readers a driving test using questions from the Registry of Motor Vehicles handbook. Stay tuned, as they say. Have a great week!
