FLAG DAY

Westfield Evening News column
By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.
 June 12, 2010

Bob McKean from Stanley Park sent out a request this week to veterans in the greater Westfield community looking for their help as the staff at Stanley Park work to put the finishing touches on a veteran’s memorial at the park.

He wrote, “One thing the Veterans’ Committee is looking for is some material (sand or the like) from any of the major wars or deployments…We would either drill a small hole or other procedure…to include them within this monument.  I already have Iwo Jima sand and a WWII veteran came up to me at last night’s concert and has some sand from another major WWII battle…we sure hope we can pick up some from Omaha Beach…ironically yesterday was the anniversary of D-Day…Please pass the word and maybe we can make an already special memorial even more special…a very special dedication will be coming in the Fall…”

Veterans, if you have any sand or material like this please give Bob McKean, Managing Director at Stanley Park a call.  His number is 568-9312.  I’ve seen pictures of the memorial and I think it looks fantastic.  This will make it even better.

I wanted to give an update to readers on the Safe Driver bill Conference Committee.  I am one of the six conferees.  We met this week with all the legislators and staff to continue to work on combining and consolidating the House and Senate version of the bills into a final conference report.  You’ll remember that some of the major parts of the bill pertained to texting while driving, cell phone usage, and testing of unsafe drivers.

I can’t say for sure when the Committee’s work will be done but all of us have been at every meeting to hammer out a final bill that will accomplish the Legislature’s intent of making the roads safer.

Speaking of Conference Committee, according to the State House News Service, “An illegal immigration crackdown, hanging in the balance during ongoing House-Senate budget negotiations, got a boost Thursday from 28 House members, who urged negotiators to include the Senate-passed provision in the budget’s final draft.

“The members, including 14 Democrats and several of Speaker Robert DeLeo’s handpicked committee chairs, sent a letter to the six members charged with hammering out a compromise budget, urging them to “review the proposal’s merit and include it, or something substantially similar” in the budget.

“The House Democrats supporting the measure included members from all regions of the state, and from urban, suburban and rural districts. Fourteen of the 15 House Republicans signed onto the letter as well. The 15th Republican, Rep. Robert Hargraves, is a member o f the conference committee.”

My Republican colleagues and I all signed onto the letter and had backed the Perry amendment on the House floor during our budget deliberations in April.  The amendment simply requires a person to show proof of his residency status before being eligible for taxpayer subsidized public assistance like housing, welfare, non-emergency health care, and higher education benefits.

One of the greatest resources in Westfield is the Western Massachusetts Hospital on East Mountain Road.  It falls under the auspices of the state Department of Public Health within the jurisdiction of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services.  This year Western Mass Hospital is celebrating its 100th Anniversary.

This month my cable show, "From the State House to Your House," will feature Derrick Tallman, CEO of WMH and will focus on its 100th Anniversary.  I invite you to watch my show and hope you will enjoy the many facets of our city and state as I highlight them in the program.

The half hour program airs on Westfield's Community Programming Channel, Channel 15, on Sundays at 4:30 PM, Wednesdays at 8:30 PM, and Thur sdays at 10:30 AM & 10:30 PM.

I would like to congratulate Westfield resident and MassHealth employee Dori Mathieu on completing the Executive Office of Health and Human Services Management Certificate Program.  The graduation ceremony was held Thursday in the Great Hall of the State House and I was on hand to congratulate Dori and present her with a citation from the House of Representatives.

As you know, Monday, June 14, 2010 is Flag Day.  Flag Day is a day set aside especially to honor our flag and the nation it represents.

I would like to invite you to join me in a standout on Monday from 5:00 PM -6:30 PM at the new Great River Bridge in Westfield.  I will be holding an American Flag.  Bring your flag and let's line the route along the bridge to remind rush hour commuters of our pride in America.

This is not a political event.  It's not a campaign event.  It's not a partisan event.  It's not a press event.  I'm not bringing a Don Humason sign.  I'm bringing my American Flag.

What can you do?  Bring your flag and join me.  Invite your friends, co-workers, family members, colleagues, fellow Americans.  Email your friends.  Facebook them.  Twitter them.  Let's stand out and celebrate being Americans and enjoy our freedom.

I'll be there rain or shine.  I'd love to see you there too.  Thank you.  God Bless America!
