UPDATED CONTACTS

 Westfield Evening News column

By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.

March 20, 2010

My wife and I have done our duty, completed our census form, and already sent it back.  So, to the U.S. Census Bureau: Enough already with all the mail!  Please, stop wasting my money and stop sending me reminders.  Thank you.

Some troubling news out of Beacon Hill is that the House and Senate Ways and Means Committees have decided that their budget proposals for Fiscal Year 2011 will include a cut of local aid to cities and towns across Massachusetts of 4% across the board.  Despite a resolution proposed by my Republican colleagues and co-sponsored by dozens of Democrat legislators, the W&M Committees have decided that local aid is not a priority worthy of protecting from the fiscal vagaries of the Commonwealth.  They say we don’t have the money this year.  I certainly hope their budgets don’t include new appropriations.

This Sunday is the annual Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade.  Congratulations to Mark Hanrahan, the Westfield Parade Marshall, who will lead the Westfield contingent through the streets of the Paper City.  Congratulations also to the 2010 Irishman of the Year, David Bates, and the 2010 Irishwoman of the Year, Reggie Laverty.  And finally, congratulations to our Colleen, Kirsten Thresher, and the members of her Court.

With any luck, the Colleen and her Court will ride the route aboard an award-winning float called “Under the Irish Sea,” once again built by the magnificent Sons of Erin Float Committee.  Good luck!

Last week, I wrote my column on “How to Lobby like a Professional.”  It must have worked.  Several of my constituents contacted me to urge me to vote against the health care insurance reform bill.  So I guess we’re getting somewhere.  The good news is that people in my district reached out to me.  The bad news is that they contacted the wrong legislator.

I explained they needed to weigh in with their Federal Representative in the United States House of Representatives, not with their State Representative in the Massachusetts House.

So this week I want to publish an updated list of contact information you may use to contact your public officials in Washington, Westfield, and Boston.
