PERFECT RECORD August 8, 2009 By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.
I would like to express my sympathy and condolences to the family and co-workers of Westfield Firefighter Glen R. Walz. Glen died tragically in a motorcycle accident last week. As the son of a firefighter, I know what it’s like to live with the knowledge that your loved one may, at any moment, have to run into a burning building when everyone else is running out, or do something just as dangerous. How members of the fire service learn to live with the constant threat of danger is a mystery to many, but firefighters love their duties and love living their lives. It’s senseless and sad when a firefighter is taken out of this world unexpectedly, doing something mundane like riding a motorcycle. Glen was a firefighter, a veteran, a husband, and a father. At 39 he was way too young to go. I know the men and women of the Westfield Fire Department will miss him dearly, as will his wife and sons. I will too. The House and Senate have begun their August recess. Just like our colleagues in Washington, DC, summer break for legislators means more time home in our districts and less time at the capitol. I didn’t go to the State House at all this week. Thanks to my intern, Pat Healy, for covering the Boston office for me. I’ll be back on Beacon Hill next Tuesday and Wednesday. I’m proud to report that, once again, I have a perfect voting record for this legislative session. Since January when the session began there have been 210 formal roll call votes taken. I have been present to cast every single one. That gives me another 100% voting record. Obviously, showing up and doing your job is important. I have cast over 1,585 consecutive votes in the Massachusetts House. I have not missed a single roll call vote in over four years, since July, 2005. I just wanted to let you know I take my responsibility of representing the people of Westfield very seriously. We hear a lot about alternative media nowadays. While many people still get their news from sources like newspapers, radio, and television, many others rely on alternative sources like the internet, blogs, and social networking sites like Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook. I rely on this column in the Westfield Evening News to get information out to my constituents. I also count on them and other newspapers to cover stories of issues or activities that I am involved in as a state representative. But, in keeping with the times and my pledge from 2002 to be available, accessible, and accountable to my constituents, I am also using the internet and Facebook. I have a website www.DonHumason.org where you can find my contact information, copies of my weekly columns, and other news stories that may not get picked up by the papers. My email address at the State House is Rep.DonaldHumason@Hou.State.MA.US. I am also available at www.Facebook/DonHumason. Another way I try to provide information to my constituents is through a monthly cable program that I do on the Westfield Community Programming Channel 15 called, “From the State House to Your House.” The show this month focuses on Stanley Park and its 60th Anniversary and features Robert McKean, Managing Director of the park. The half hour program airs on Channel 15 on Sundays at 4:30 PM, Wednesdays at 8:30 PM, and Thursdays at 10:30 AM & 10:30 PM. My office is providing free Massachusetts and Pioneer Valley Getaway Guides to help folks plan their summer vacations. My Chief of Staff, Sarah Latour, and I may be reached at my Westfield District Office at 64 Noble Street, Westfield, by calling 568-1366. Give us a call and we’ll set aside a couple free Getaway Guides for you to pick up.
Congratulations to the Westfield Sons of Erin on their 30th anniversary. Have a great week! * * *
