House & Senate Vote To Close Pension Loopholes
Today, Don Humason, Westfield’s State Representative, voted in favor of a House and Senate Conference Committee Report that would overhaul certain aspects of the state pension system. After receiving a number of phone calls and emails from frustrated constituents angered by the waste and abuse of our state’s pension system, Representative Humason viewed the compromise as a positive first step in an area in dire need of reform. “The enactment of this bill was certainly a step in the right direction,” Humason said. “I joined my colleagues in voting to eliminate some of the most blatant loopholes existing within the state pension system. Yet in my opinion, we still have a long way to go in attaining real cost-savings for the taxpayers of this state.” “Fiscally speaking, I am worried that the Commonwealth is heading down an unsustainable path when it comes to pension benefits for public employees. We need to enact tangible reform. This being said, I challenge the Special Commission on Pension Reform to put forth such recommendations for the Legislature’s consideration.” Humason and his colleagues in the House Republican Caucus have been advocates for real cost savings in the state pension system for years. He is hopeful the opportunity will finally come to debate real pension reform in the near future. “Given the fiscal crisis our state is faced with, now is the time for innovative thinking in an effort to reduce state spending and preserve taxpayer dollars. The real reform is yet to come,” said Humason.
