MEMORIAL DAY 2009

May 23, 2009

By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.

Monday is Memorial Day.  As a politician, a citizen, an American, I am here because of men and women throughout our nation’s history who have put on their country’s military uniform, shouldered a rifle, and fought and died in defense of and service to their country.

On Monday, Westfield will say thank you to our veterans, remembering those who have gone before us and honoring those who are serving even now around the world.  It is because of them that we are a free and great country.

I am reminded of a great quote attributed to many American Presidents from Eisenhower to Reagan to Clinton, “There is nothing wrong with America that what’s right with America can’t fix.”

In Westfield, the Memorial Day parade and ceremony that follows are the largest and best attended events in the city, aside from perhaps the Fourth of July fireworks at Stanley Park every summer. Please join our veterans at Parker Memorial Park across from South Middle School after the parade for a fitting, moving tribute.

I read a quote this week that I intend to repeat Monday.  “Thanksgiving is a day when we pause to give thanks for the things we have.  Memorial Day is a day when we pause to give thanks to the people who fought for the things we have.”

We remember those who are serving today in combat theatres around the world.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them.  We wish them a quick and safe return home.

Thank you to all the men and women in uniform today: soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines.

Thank you to all who have ever worn the uniform of the United States armed forces.

On this Memorial Day 2009 we will gather to honor, remember, and thank them all.

God bless them, and God bless America!

Congratulations to the recipients of scholarships from the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of Westfield.  Regrettably, due to a House formal session Wednesday, I was unable to attend the ceremony.

With the cost of higher education increasing every year, our scholars need all the help they can get to pay for college.  Thank you to all in the greater Westfield community who contribute to CSF and make this assistance possible.

I’d also like to congratulate all the graduates of the Westfield State College Class of 2009 who graduated on the WSC campus green last Saturday.  I had the honor and pleasure of bringing the greetings of the Great and General Court and specifically the 6 members of the House of Representatives, including myself, who are proud alumni of the school.

This Tuesday, in my ongoing role as Chairman of the Legislature’s Aviation Caucus, I had the opportunity to tour the Pittsfield Municipal Airport in Berkshire County and to meet Mark Germanowski, the Airport Manager there.  Like Barnes Airport, the Pittsfield Airport is a beautiful facility and a great resource for the region.

While in Pittsfield I was invited to make a guest appearance on a popular Berkshire County public access cable program called “Out Front TV” hosted by Republican activist Peter Giftos.

The hour-long show airs throughout Berkshire County and may be viewed online by clicking on the following link and then clicking Watch Now: http://www.pittsfieldtv.net/Cablecast/Public/Show.aspx?ChannelID=1&ShowID=10863

As the Western-most Republican State Representative in Massachusetts I sometimes feel like the only Texas Ranger on the wild frontier.  There’s a lot of territory to cover but I think I’m up to it.  I really appreciate Peter’s invitation for me to appear again on the Berkshire County Republican Association’s program.  It was a pleasure talking about our party and the work Republicans are doing to represent the taxpayers of the Commonwealth.

Speaking of that, at the time I am writing my column the Massachusetts State Senate is still debating their version of the Fiscal Year 2010 state budget.  Mostly along party lines Senators raised the sales tax to 6.25%, eliminated the sales tax exemption on liquor, and passed a number of local option taxes for cities and towns.  Revenues this month continue to slide.  We still haven’t reached the bottom of this economic freefall.

Hang on taxpayers; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
