HOUSE PASSES HIGHER ED BOND BILL;
Don Humason, Jr., Westfield’s State Representative, is pleased to announce the passage of the Higher Education Bond Bill in the House of Representatives Tuesday. The bill authorizes the state to issue $2.2 billion in general obligation bonds to assist in funding the capital needs of Massachusetts public higher education institutions. Of that $2.2 million, $1.2 billion is for state and community colleges. $1 billion is for the University of Massachusetts. $35.8 million of appropriations are earmarked in the bill for Westfield State College. Humason filed an amendment which was accepted to increase the funding for a new academic building from $23,489,597 to $33 million. There has not been a new academic building constructed on campus for decades. Also earmarked is $2.8 million for safety and accessibility renovations to Dever Auditorium. “I am pleased that I was able to increase the appropriation for a new academic building at Westfield State,” Humason said. “As a graduate of the college, I believe that students and faculty need to have modern academic space in which to teach and learn. I am grateful that my colleagues in the House accepted my amendment to earmark $33 million for that new building.” Humason is the Ranking Republican member of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Higher Education, and a 1989 graduate of Westfield State College. The Higher Ed Bond Bill has already passed in the state Senate. A conference committee will be appointed to work out a compromise between the different versions before the bill is sent to the Governor.
