HUMASON ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF LIBRARY CAUCUS

Don Humason, Westfield’s State Representative, announces the formation of a new Library Legislative Caucus at the State House.

This caucus has been formed in recognition of the importance of public libraries and the vital services they provide to the residents of our Massachusetts cities and towns.

During a time when financially struggling municipalities are often making cuts in library funding, the Library Legislative Caucus will focus its attention on increasing resources going to libraries through budgetary items such as the State Aid to Public Libraries program.

“I am pleased to be a founding member of the new Library Legislative Caucus,” said Representative Humason.  “Back at home, I am proud to serve as a member of the Westfield Athenaeum Board of Directors and a Corporator and Friend of the library.”

Serving as Chairman of the Library Legislative Caucus, Representative Mark Falzone (D-Saugus) noted, “Libraries are crucial to jobs, education, economic development, small businesses and entrepreneurs, and especially in a time of economic concern, they have an ever-growing importance to our communities.

The Library Caucus will focus on ensuring that our libraries receive the essential state aid that enables them to take advantage of economies of scale and inter-library synergies, so that each library location becomes a portal to our entire Massachusetts system of information and resources.”

“I know the importance of libraries to my constituents and the people I serve as a legislator,” Humason said.  “This new caucus is an excellent vehicle through which I, together with like-minded legislators, can support funding and other issues that enhance public library services.  During uncertain economic time, we need our libraries even more than ever.”

The Library Legislative Caucus, which currently has more that 40 members, recently held its first meeting at the State House.  In attendance were Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) Director Robert C. Maier, MBLC Head of Public Library Advisory Unit and Government Liaison Maureen Killoran, and Massachusetts Library Association Legislative Committee Co-Chair Jackie Rafferty.  Em Clair Knowles, MBLC Chairperson, spoke about the importance of having a caucus that was “dedicated to moving library issues forward.”
