CLOCKWORK By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.
It’s back! Like clockwork: Daylight Savings Time. Don’t forget to “spring ahead” your clocks by one hour Sunday at 2 AM. Why are we changing our clocks so early? As I wrote in a column last year, the change helps with our energy costs by allowing us to keep our lights off later into the evening, as well as giving us more time to work or play outside every night. According to a memo from the Massachusetts Information Technology Division President George Bush signed the Federal Energy Policy Act of 2005 on August 8, 2005 which amended the United States Uniform Time Act of 1966 by changing the start and end dates of daylight savings time. Those changes took effect in 2007. Prior to this law change, we used to set our clocks ahead by one hour on the first Sunday in April. Starting last year we did it earlier, on the 2nd Sunday of March. That gave us nearly three more weeks of longer days and more daylight in the spring. Prior to this law change, we used to turn our clocks back one hour on the last Sunday in October. Starting in 2007 we turned our clocks back by one hour on the first Sunday in November. I’m glad that Congress and President Bush passed this law giving us all more daylight. The House of Representatives did not meet in any formal sessions this week. We received an email from Speaker DiMasi’s office on Tuesday saying that because the Housing Bond Bill was not out of committee yet the sessions would be cancelled. But I still had to go to Boston. I want to thank Bill Parks and Bo Sullivan who made the trip to Beacon Hill Monday for the sixth annual Boys and Girls Club Alliance Legislative Lobby Day. 39 Boys and Girls Clubs across Massachusetts joined forces and created an alliance that benefits the clubs and the kids they serve. Bo and Bill are a big part of why our own club in Westfield is so successful. As a former “Club kid” myself, I appreciate it. Congratulations to the Westfield Kiwanis on their 39th annual auction last weekend. I was the lucky bidder on a couple items and had the pleasure of being a guest auctioneer and sponsor of one block. The Kiwanis Auction has become a fun annual tradition in town. I’d like to congratulate Westfield resident Kevin Kousch on the grand opening of his new business Formal Affair Tuxedos and Tailor Shop at 581 Westfield Street in West Springfield. Kevin is the former manager of the Formalwear Shop at Yale Genton and bought the business when Yale Genton closed. In my job as State Rep, I have to wear a tuxedo a lot more than I’d expected. Kevin made sure I looked good, for which I am eternally grateful. I had my meeting with the Chairman of House Ways and Means, Representative Bob DeLeo, on Thursday. This gave me my opportunity to advocate in person for Westfield’s local aid and my other budget priorities for this year’s budget. Spring is right around the corner. Soon the sap will begin to run and the local sugar houses will start making yummy Maple syrup. If you want to get a jump on the pancakes, visit Pomeroy’s Sugar House at 491 Russellville Road, just past Kosinski Farms. They’re open from 9 AM -1 PM on Fridays - Sundays. Janice and I went up for lunch with some friends after church last Sunday and it was fantastic!
