WELCOME PRESIDENT DOBELLE

By State Representative Don Humason, Jr.

February 9, 2008

The New York Football Giants beat the New England Patriots in a 17-14 game Sunday that came as a big surprise to many of us in Patriot’s Nation.  Credit should go to the Giants for a game well played.  They beat us like a rented mule, fair and square.  So much for the perfect season.  To my sister Apryl and my future brother in law Hank in Miami, wipe that smug look off your face. There’s always next year.

Speaking of a beating, Mitt Romney bested John McCain and Hillary Clinton topped Barrack Hussein Obama in Massachusetts on Super Duper Tuesday.  Some pundits had predicted the opposite results.  According to the Secretary of State, a record 1,750,000 Bay Staters voted on Tuesday.  About 43% of those eligible to vote in the Massachusetts presidential primary cast their ballots.

Congratulations to the winners and congratulations to the 2008 Colleen and her Court who were selected at the Sons of Erin Colleen Ball last Friday evening at Chez Josef.  On Saturday night Mayor Mike Boulanger and his family held their Inaugural Ball at Shaker Farms Country Club.

Congratulations to the B’Shara family who opened The Runway Restaurant in the new airport administration building at Barnes Airport.  Unlike previous restaurants at Barnes, The Runway will serve breakfast, lunch, AND dinner.  We cut the ribbon on Monday and already the place is doing a booming business.

I attended a fun and unique event sponsored by Westfield State College and proposed by their new president Dr. Evan Dobelle.  It was a late night “Pancake breakfast with the President” Monday at 11PM in the college dining commons.

As a former WSC student and the college’s State Representative I just had to be there.  I joined the Dobelle’s and college staff in serving nearly 700 hungry college kids who came out in force for the event to meet the new president.  It was terrific.

On Tuesday, the Westfield Boys and Girls Club hosted a welcome reception for the Dobelle’s that was well attended by people from the greater Westfield community.  It appears that Dr. Dobelle is off to a great start and I’m pleased to be working with him on behalf of the college and the city of Westfield.

I plan to have Evan as my next guest on my Channel 15 cable show.  My current guest on “From the State House to Your House” is Westfield Mayor Mike Boulanger.  The show airs on Sundays at 4:30 PM, Wednesdays at 8:30 PM, and Thursdays at 10:30 AM and 10:30 PM.

There will be a Municipal Civil Service Firefighter examination on Saturday, April 26.  The Massachusetts Human Resource Division (HRD) of the Executive Office of Administration and Finance is responsible for the administration of this state wide entry-level exam

The list resulting from this exam will determine the pool of applicants eligible for appointment to the position of Firefighter in cities and towns covered by the Civil Service Statute for two years following the establishment of the eligible list.  The deadline to apply to take the exam is Tuesday, March 18, 2008.  Those interested can apply online at www.mass.gov/civilservice

As the proud son of a Westfield firefighter, I think it is important for the state to have a strong pool of candidates when it comes time to hire for these vital public safety positions.  For additional information about the examination, eligibility requirements, or the application process, HRD can be reached toll free at 1-800-392-6178.

Despite the fact that I have a district office at 64 Noble Street in downtown Westfield that I maintain for the convenience of my constituents, I also enjoy holding public office hours outside my office at different spots around town.  Last month I was at Adrienne’s Bakery at the Pilgrim Candle Marketplace.

This month my Legislative Aide, Sarah Latour, and I will be holding open public office hours at the Tea Pot Gallery in downtown Westfield on Friday, February 22 from 10:30 AM to noon.

Feel free to stop by to see me or just swing by for a cup of tea.  Of course, you can always reach Sarah and me by calling my office at 568-1366.  Information is available on my website www.DonHumason.org.

Representative Don Humason and his new aide Sarah Latour may be reached at their Westfield District office, 64 Noble Street, Westfield, MA 01085, 568-1366. Their Boston address is State House Room 542, Boston, MA 02133, (617) 722-2803. Email address: Rep.DonaldHumason@Hou.state.ma.us
